Hello and welcome to the June edition of the Brighton Person-Centred Community news. We have two separate meetings again this month, one online, one in person. Scroll down for info on the meetings and an important opportunity to engage in exploration of whiteness, inequality and racism. As always, if you have anything you'd like to share that you think would be supportive for Community members or want to reach out for something yourself, do consider using this newsletter as a way to do so. In order for something to appear in the newsletter please send it by the end of the month to appear in the next month's email (which will come out around the second week of the month). Online meeting The meeting will take place at 9.30-12.30 on Saturday 18th June. It would be helpful if you can contact Chris to say if you are planning to attend on firstname.lastname@example.org. The normal suggested donation is £5 but we do not wish money to get in the way if this amount is difficult for you. Our bank details are: PERSON CENTRED COMMUNITY; 08-92-99, 65079432. Examining Whiteness Saturday 25th June 2022: 9.30am-12.30pm, Brunswick Room, Cornerstone Community Centre, Church Road, Hove, BN3 2FL This pilot event is offered free of charge to psychotherapists and counsellors from all backgrounds and ethnicities wanting to actively address the injustices and inequalities of racism through personal and collective work on white identity, power, privilege and complicity. Participants need to be prepared to participate in uncomfortable and difficult conversations in a respectful environment, with the personal content being confidential to the group. Participants also need to know how to support themselves in the process. By doing this work together we hope to actively work towards dismantling internal, relational, and structural racism. Following on from the success of previous groups run in London by ‘Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility’ (PCSR). White psychotherapists and trainers, Frances Basset and Brennan Holt, will be the facilitators. Frances Basset is a Transpersonal Psychotherapist and Supervisor with 20 years’ experience in private practice in Brighton and a former senior lecturer at University of Brighton where she ran modules in anti-discriminatory practice for health care professionals. Brennan Holt is a Person Centred counsellor and Lecturer in counselling. He has spent years working in various group settings and believes strongly in their therapeutic potential. Facilitators Statement: We are facilitating this group because we no longer want to be part of a therapy profession and world where clients, trainees and practitioners of colour continue to experience oppression, discrimination, and harm, where their experiences are not heard and valued and where white practitioners do not do the necessary internal and relational work to stop this happening. We believe that if we, as white people, are going to grow personally and professionally we need to confront where we come from and that we can only really do this in relationship. To book a place on ‘Examining Whiteness’ please email: firstname.lastname@example.org N.B. There will be a maximum of 15 Places at this event.
