June Newsletter

The latest news from the Brighton Person-Centred Community...

Hello and welcome to the June edition of the Brighton Person-Centred Community news.

We hope you are doing OK and navigating the changing situation we're in. The Community will be having an online meeting again in June. If it becomes clear that we are also able to hold an in person meeting this month we will let you know. There is further info on the online group on Saturday 20th June below. We are in discussion about the possibility of continuing online meetings alongside in-person meetings in future.

Also in this newsletter we have information on an opportunity to give support to NHS staff, a profile on one of our regular attendees and info on some more online Focusing experiences. If you have anything you'd like to share that you think would be supportive for Community members or want to reach out for something yourself, do consider using this newsletter as a way to do so.

Find out why our members get so much out of the monthly meetings...

Mary Saunders MBACP Registered Counsellor

I was first drawn to the group some 8-10 years ago, because at the time, I was training to be a Person-Centred counsellor and I felt that I could gain a greater understanding of the approach by meeting with like-minded counsellors. It was also an opportunity to be reflective in an environment where that would be not only acceptable, but understood.

The same reasons that I originally joined the group apply today, but I now know regular members of the group, but also have the added benefit of meeting new members. The counselling profession can be a lonely and isolating one and the group is a chance to network with other professionals, whether they are Person-Centred or not.

I can share issues with the group if I choose to and to feel ‘held’ and understood, but also at times challenged. I also have the opportunity to hear other people’s experiences. I consider this is a real privilege and it frequently exposes me to another’s different perspective, leading to my self-development by giving me greater understanding and empathy. It’s not always easy, but is very often rewarding.

For these reasons, I am very grateful for the opportunity to meet with a mixed group of people, some of whom have become friends and valued colleagues. It is also an ideal way to achieve a few extra hours of CPD.

I work in Peacehaven and Seaford as a Person-Centred counsellor with individuals and couples. My particular interests and training are in substance misuse and adoption.

Community Meetings

These are currently suspended. Once we are able once more to access our usual meeting room, then these are the details.

Community Meetings are held on the third Saturday at each month at the Friends Meeting House, Ship Street, Brighton BN1 1AF. We meet upstairs, usually in room 3, but the room number will be indicated on the whiteboard which is next to the Reception desk. Newcomers are always welcome, come along, say hi and see what it’s all about!

The meeting runs from 9:30 to 12:30, but arrive a little earlier to give yourself time to prepare a drink. The cost is £5 to cover hire of room and tea, coffee and biscuits.
