The medical model is often criticised by person-centred practitioners and is increasingly challenged within mental healthcare settings. However, it is not always made clear what, within this umbrella term, is being criticised.

This workshop aims to explore the key characteristics of the medical model with the aim of helping person-centred practitioners critique it more effectively. Participants will have an opportunity to explore their own responses to it and to reflect on how they communicate and dialogue with those who seem to think and practise from an altogether different paradigm.

Rachel Freeth currently works as a psychiatrist in Gloucester. In 1998 she completed a diploma in counselling in the person-centred approach and since then she has sought to bring the values, philosophy and attitudes of the approach into her workplace. She understands well the tensions created by trying to be person-centred within medical model settings and has written about many of these challenges and tensions, including in her book Humanising Psychiatry and Mental Health: The Challenge of the Person-Centred Approach. Radcliffe Publishing, 2007.
